Well, what an interesting few weeks. Most of us were out sick with various stuff but are slowly getting back into the routine, just in time for the Holidays Applying bottom paint and new Duke Blue paint to the topsides of a 1934 Electri-Craft 18ft Lyman Islander, New deck beams, inwales, rub rails and now dry fitting the mahogany marine plywood decks Installing the deck hardware and mahogany trim on a Dutch made Celebrity class sailboat. Note the new Dynel deck covering. That stuff makes a nice non-skid deck. The final fairing of the bottom on the 1957 Continental. The next step is a special primer coat. Rebuilding the motor well for the Flats Flyer, Also rebuilding the structure for new deck hatches.
Also many other projects moving along like the Resorter, Riviera, an several other electric boats.

1934 15ft Electric New boat in the shop a 1934 15' Electric. Jack has removed the exterior hardware, rudder, prop, stuffing box, steering linkage, interior seats and floor pannels. He has stripped the deck and removed the old deck caulk lines. The crew rolled the boat over and washed the exterior. Jack also has sanded all of the paint off the bottom and preppes the sides for new paint. He is not applying a coat of primer on the bottom. 58 Continental Jack has contined to sand the whole boat and fill holes. Lyman Islander Jack has stained and applied a coat of varnish. 57 Continental Shane and Gary have applied a layer of fiberglass on the portside bottom. 1995 Budsin Shane has continued on this project and has scraped the coaming. Shane has put the upholstery on the dash and two side panels. Gary Out of Shop Gary is out of town for Marine conferences and classes in Montreal. He will return to the shop November 13th. He's had a meeting at the Tidewater Wooden Boat Shop In Norfolk. He made a stop at the Mariners Museum In Newport News on his way north, Visited the Antique Boat America showroom in Clayton NY on his way to Montreal, Crossed lake Champlain on his way to Maine. Even got some tips from the master Jamie Lowell. Whirlwind Jack has modified and mounted the outer transom steel engine mount plate. Lyman Islander Jack made a cutaway in the forward deck frames in order to fit and install the new king plank. He has also stripped and repaired the inner gunnel face wood. He will stain and varnish those in preparation for cutting and fitting the new deck. 58 Continental Jack made further repairs to the side planks along the way - he had reinstalled the repaired side planks and bunged the entire boat. He is currently finishing the trimming of the bungs and sanding. Celebrity Shane has finished the deck trim and next he will work on the toe rails. 1995 Budsin Lightning Bug Shane has stripped and sanded the deck and transom. Next he plans to repair the broken deck plank. 57 Continental Shane laid fiberglass on the keel and the chine. He has fared out the fiberglass and laid some of the fairing epoxy to prep for full sheets of fiberglass. THIS JUST IN! Gary's Marine Painting and Varnishing Class in Amesbury has some openings! Lyman Islander Jack has milled a king plank and reinforced + adjusted the exsiting deck beams. 58 Continental Jack has heat gunned & scraped all the varnish off the sides. During this he found a few split planks and has started removing and repairing them. He has also begun sanding the transom & sides of the boat + bunging the transom. CC Riviera Shane has been putting the deck and interior hardware on and getting ready to install the engine. Celebrity Gary and Shane started installing the coaming in the celebrity + all of the deck trim. U-18 Shane has started a major sand on the U-18 in preparation for the final 3-4 coats of varnish. 57 Continental Shane has prepped to lay the fiberglass on the bottom. Century Resorter Gary has removed the rudder post and cleaned, replaced, and refastened it. In doing so he removed the seats, fuel tank, etc,. He will soon be adding the bilge blower and repositioning the fuel filter in preparation for adding the new electric marine fuel pump. Carolina Flats Skiff Gary has begun remaking the internal structure of the hatch supports and prepping for a new deck. 1934 15ft Electric
NEW boat alert! This just in the shop - a 1934 15ft electric. Stay tuned to watch its restoration & refinishing! + more new boats in the shop to be announced soon! Lyman Islander Jack has shaped and dry fit the Starboard rub rails and they are now installed! He also has laminated the portside rub rails and installed the stern knee and inwale. Carolina Flats Skiff Gary is currently rebuilding the subdeck structure in preparation for the plywood top deck. He has also removed the stern motor well that was rotted for replacement. U-18 Shane has installed through holes, rutter post, stern linkage and applied more varnish to the U-18. 57 Continental Shane has removed the fiberglass coating in preparation for plank repair & rot examination. He has also shaped and steam bent a new transom board to replace the lower transom plank that was rotted. NEW BOATS IN! The Resorter is our second new boat into the shop and is currently undergoing its initial inspection phase. Stay up to date on all things boats here and on our Facebook ! U18 Shane has drilled holes in the U18 including the rutter post, engine water intake, and the drain plug. He is currently working on the floor risers that have just been painted and are being fitted to install. Next they will install the engine. Hackercraft Jack has reinstalled the rebuilt carburetor, new alternator hooked up the fuel system, and installed the exhaust. Next they will test running the engine. Lyman Islander The crew has continued to remove all the rotten wood on the boat & has begun replacing some of the rotten frames and wood. 56 Continental Jack has installed the new ceiling board base trim and kick board. CC Riviera Shane has applied the final coat of varnish on the Riviera. We recived it's chrome from the owner which will soon be installed! Whirlwind Gary has repaired some of the damage to the transom and installed new stainless steel motor mount brakets. Next the crew will install the white caulk lines on the deck. Soon the engine and chrome deck hardware will be ready to be installed. U18 More and more varnish done on the U18. The ceilling boards are being varnished now. Lookin good! 58 Continental The side planks and bottom have been installed! Jack is letting it cure before puttying the bottom and bunging the sides. Celebrity Deck has been completed with all an new sub deck. The coamings are being varnished along with the mahogany trim to soon be installed. Whirlwind The varnishing and painting on this boat have been completed! Carolina Flats Skiff Gary has installed the skegs and applied a sealer coat & varnish on the mahogany transom. The first coat of paint on the bottom is on and will get one to two more. Hackercraft Jack is installing an engine flush value on the hackercraft. 57 Continental Shane has stripped the varnish off the deck and started stripping the sides. He is now preparing to remove the engine to toll the boat so he can repair the bottom. Lyman Islander
The crew has removed the deck and rub rails to find rot and determine what needs to be replaced. The man. the myth, the legend. That's right, Gary Lowell is back in town! We missed him while he was away but loved getting to hear all the fun he had visiting family, teaching classes & working on boats up in Maine. Carolina Flats Skiff Well look who's working on this boat! The new mahogany transom has been installed and was sanded, stained & a sealer coat of varnish has been applied. He also primed the bottom of the boat along with the skegs. it looks great. Gary is working on the water line and installing new skegs to help the steering. 58 Continental Jack has reinstalled the starboard side panels and outer chine planks with 5200 marine adhesive. He has also installed the new transom planks & made additional repairs on the port side, side planks. He has filled holes in backing battens in preparation for reinstalling the side planks on the port side. U-18 Shane has continued to apply varnish to the exterior and ceiling board panels. Whirlwind Recognize this boat? That's because we flipped it. The crew flipped the Whirlwind over yesterday and even got a fun time lapse of it. Check out our facebook to see it flip. After, Shane started prepping the wooden sides by sanding it for varnish. Celebrity Shane has applied another coat of top side paint onto the deck and has been building varnish on the miscellaneous wooden parts. 57 Continental Shane has removed all the floor panels, ceiling boards, seats, deck hardware, windshield, fuel tank, and the damaged transom plank to further investigate & determine replacements needed. Carolina Flats Skiff Meghan has finished sanding the bottom paint off in preparation for installing new wooden skegs & repainting. She & Jack have also removed the transom hardware & sanded the transom inorder to prep for laminating the new transom veneers. Jack milled wood for new transom veneers & has installed half of it. Today they are working on finishing the laminating new wood over the transom. U-18 The U-18 is looking glossy & new after Shane has applied multiple coats of varnish. Do you know how many coats of varnish it takes to build on a boat? About 6 to 7 coats on each boat. Lookin 'good Shane! CC Riviera The Riviera is in our finishing room getting its final coat of varnish from Shane. Look at that shine. 58 Continental Jack has milled all the wood for the transom planks & side planks that need to be replaced due to rot. He is now working on shaping and fitting the transom planks. Shown below you can see where Jack has dry fitted the side planks that are being reinstalled & not replaced. Celebrity Meghan is continuing to build varnish on the various wooden pieces including the rub rails and toe rails. Hackercraft Jack has reinstalled the engine into its engine compartment & is working towards connecting & organizing the wiring. He has also made custom brackets to secure the engine plumbing & battery boxes - check those out below! Lyman Islander
Shane has been continuing the exploration of this boat by removing the forward deck to investigate & address the rot. Never a fun thing to find but nothing our crew cannot handle! CC Riviera Shane has been working on some touch ups to the Riviera, getting it ready for its engine to go back in! 56 Continental Jack and Shane tested the engine today on the 56! That new trailer is looking good. 58 Continental Jack has applied the starboard side to the 58 and now the bottom planking is completed. What a difference from start to now - see it for yourself below! Celebrity The crew has completed applying the dyel to both sides of the Celebrity. Meghan has been working on sanding & refinishing wooden pieces to the boat. Whirlwind The whirlwind is ready to flip after finishing the bottom paint. Next up is applying the proper spring tensioners so that the motor can be lifted without the steering wires coming undone and adding a Bimini top! Stay tuned, exciting stuff happening. |
